NOT ALONE

Curated by Søren Berner (DK)

With Mercedes Azpilicueta, Merzedes Sturm-Lie and Samina Bazai

In Autumn 2017 I invited four artists to develop a performance on four separate evenings at Cabaret Voltaire - hence the name; Performance 4 Evenings. For this series I proposed a dogma to the invited artists: The Curator must be integrated. I hereby attempted to highlight my own role in producing and developing the projects. Though labeled as a curator, I do not consider it my role to develop exhibition-concepts that artists may or should try to relate to. I rather see my role as conflicting one that constantly has to be re- thought and renegotiated.

The performances are shown on one specific evening and there is a lot of effort and preparation put in to these four evenings prior to the performance.
I came to realize that the relationship and new ideas evolving from the continuous correspondence with the invited artists prior to the performances was far more important to me than the actual execution of the performances.

For this reason the co-creation evolving from the correspondences with the invited artists during the preparation period, will have a more central part in the new series. To make this work, I will try to create a conversation environment that facilitates and makes space for new ideas to develop during the preparations.

Listed below you will find three artists out of the seven that I have contacted who had the capacity to join the project on the specific given dates. Moreover, a short description of the works that was the reason for the invitation.

Biographies

Søren Berner (*1977 in Kopenhagen/DK, lebt in Zürich/CH)

Mercedes Azpilicueta

In March 2017 Mercedes started The Take Over where she swaps her position as an Artist, with Jacco van Uden, head of the Change Management Research Group at The Hague University of Applied Sciences during a period of one month. The idea of the project seems simple, yet the very complexity of the impact, which is now being subject to further research by philosophers, art historians and critics, could take many years of study to grasp but a fraction of.

Merzedes Sturm-Lie

made PIRATA at Odenplans subway station in 2016. This work is an installation with four flags relating to the core ideas of Humanity, Society and Cosmos. Pirata is a female bending of the word pirate and each of the flags has a symbol: BURNING HEART - Fighting for love, ideas and dreams, ODENS KNOT - Knots to join, attach and carry things, DES CON - History as a spiral of destruction and construction and NO NAME - No single person owns wealth, life or the earth.

Samina Bazai

works on Inheritance. Attan is the latest work, which is a part of Inheritance. Attan is a traditional and ceremonial Pashtun dance. The circular dance builds up slowly, gradually gaining momentum until the dancer collapses from pure exhaustion.
Inheritance is a very personal work evolving from the loss of parts of her family and it keeps developing by the new works being added.

PERFORMANCE 4 EVENINGS

Kuratiert von Søren Berner (DK)

Mit Ruth Beale (UK), Christian Falsnaes (DK) und Kristoffer Akselbo (DK)

Every place has a history.
Ignore it, is but one approach.
Deal with it, yet another.
Performance 4 Evenings is an open format that creates new works.
They might ignore the past, deal with the future, or be politically loaded, but they will be new and neither obey the rules imposed on them nor be restricted by any means of censorship.

4 this short series autumn program Adrian Notz, Director of Cabaret Voltaire has invited artist Søren Berner to curate and select 4 artists. Søren Berner has invited each artist to deal with the format of a performance evening hence Performance 4 Evenings and hereby incorporate the curator and when possible both of the rooms available at Cabaret Voltaire.
The format is open, the rules are few.
It's all about creating something new.

Dogme 17
The curator must be integrated
Everybody invited is encouraged to use both rooms during Performance 4 Evenings.
Performance 4 Evenings is an opportunity to expand our minds and collective responsibility.
Performance 4 Evenings is more than just a public event.
Excellence: Expect the best from yourself, remove obstacles, inspire and support others, embrace diversity, celebrate success.
